Class Description:

“Students explore fascinating aspects of the ancient world while learning to write using the ‘Structure and Style’ writing method! Ancient literature and a wide variety of other noteworthy topics will supply a rich foundation for imaginative and enjoyable writing. Students will work through IEW Units 1-9 as they learn to take notes, retell narrative stories, summarize references, write from pictures, summarize multiple references, write essays, and compose formal critiques.” (description from publisher)

We will read through a different source text each week, go over any unfamiliar vocabulary, and create an outline together in class. Students will use their outline to formulate their own sentences and paragraphs at home, using a checklist with specific guidelines. Writing assignments will be collected the following week and returned the week thereafter.

Class Description:

In this course, students will learn writing in conjunction with critical thinking and speaking.

During the first half of the school year, students will learn about the form of fables, discover culturally important examples, practice reading short texts, learn to copy accurately, strengthen their memory through dictation, gain opportunities to imitate sentences & fables, learn about the concepts of the main idea/character traits, and more.

The second-semester students will be exposed to parables, myths, and other tales to teach beginning writers the craft of writing well. Lessons focus on beginning/middle/end; written and oral narration; longer writing assignments; the main idea; conflict; adding dialogue and description; writing given stories; and more.

Join us as we delve into the world of literature. Throughout the class, we will tackle a variety of fiction and creative non-fiction titles and discuss the broader concerns of the ongoing literary conversation. Students will also have the opportunity to write their own stories. The class will consist of readings, lectures, discussions, and writing workshops. Homework each week will include reading and writing assignments.
