Class Description:

Learning about chemistry and physics is fascinating and FUN! We will begin by exploring the basic building blocks of creation which are atoms and molecules. We will then journey through simple chemicals, the laws of motion, and energy in its many forms before discovering concepts of electricity, magnetism, and simple machines. Along the way, your student will make their own bouncy ball, formulate a smoke bomb, construct a working periscope, create a lava lamp, and much more! All the while, God will be glorified as the Master Designer of all that they are discovering about the world and how it works.

As with other Apologia courses, your child will work on their notebook each week. They will narrate what they have learned, make sketches, and record data from experiments. By the end of the year, they can easily refer to their notebook to remind them of everything we studied. Because one of my goals for the children is to become prepared for more rigorous upper level sciences, there will be occasional online tests and some homework each week.

Class Description:

In this course we will cover the “general properties of the earth’s geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. Students learn about all the sections of the geosphere (such as core, mantle, crust, etc.) and then they study each in more detail. When studying the earth’s crust, they learn about minerals, rocks, and the rock cycle. Plate tectonics is then covered, which leads to a discussion of seismic waves, earthquakes, and volcanoes. Students then learn about fossils and how both uniformitarians and catastrophists interpret those fossils as well as the sedimentary rocks in which they are found.”

For hydrosphere, “Students first learn the properties of water such as polarity, the ability to hydrogen bond, and heat capacity. That leads to a discussion of the hydrologic cycle and residence time. Students then learn about the waves, currents, and tides in the ocean. They then move on to the ice reservoirs on the earth and then the freshwater reservoirs. Water in the air is the last part of the hydrosphere that is covered. The atmosphere is then discussed, including the composition of air, the sections of the atmosphere, temperature gradients, and pollutants. This leads to a discussion of weather. The course ends with two chapters on space, one that covers the solar system and one that covers the universe as a whole.

There are many labs that we we will do throughout the course. We will look at specific minerals, rocks, and fossils and do “mineral tests, rock analyses, fossil studies, density investigations, and magnetic property explorations. Students also get hands-on experience with waves, gases, wind, water purification, cloud formation, the Coriolis effect, precipitation, and acid/base interactions.”

Biology in Basketball? Physics in Ping Pong? Chemistry in Football? We see sports everywhere around us, in many different forms, but do we see the science behind them? We will look at why (and how) sprinters hold their breaths for their entire race. We will answer why divers would rather dive into a bubbly pool than a calm one. Why do baseballs leave the bat going faster than it was thrown on most home runs? All these questions and more will be answered as we view the sports we play (and some we don’t) through the lens of the sciences.
